Convert MKV to a VTT caption file

MKV is the flexible open container used by screen recorders, media archives, and many downloads. SnailText extracts the audio, transcribes the speech with the Whisper model, and writes a phrase-level VTT caption file, all on your machine.

You get a separate .vtt file you can attach to the video in any player that accepts WebVTT, or upload to a streaming platform.

How to convert MKV to VTT

How do I convert MKV to VTT?

What is VTT and why would I use it over SRT for MKV?
VTT (WebVTT) is the web-native caption format for HTML5 video and streaming. SRT is better for media players and editing tools. If you are embedding the MKV content on a website or streaming platform, VTT is usually what you want. SnailText generates both.
Can I get both SRT and VTT from the same MKV?
Yes, but you run it twice, once picking SRT and once picking VTT. SnailText saves both next to your video. Most workflows only need one format.
Does SnailText burn the subtitles into the video when I use MKV to VTT?
No. SnailText writes a separate VTT file and does not hardcode captions into the video. That keeps the subtitles editable and lets you attach them in any player or editor. If you want them burned in, overlay the file in a video editor afterward.
