Why an offline subtitle generator

Most subtitle generators are web tools: you upload your file, it is processed on their servers, and the free tier stamps a watermark. For anything sensitive, a recording with names, client material, an internal video, uploading it is exactly what you want to avoid.

SnailText is the opposite. It generates subtitles on your own computer with the Whisper speech model, so your media never leaves the machine. There is no upload, no account, no watermark, and no per-minute meter.

How to generate subtitles offline

  1. Install SnailText and download a speech model once (this is the only network step).
  2. Open the Transcribe files screen and add your audio or video.
  3. Choose SRT or VTT as the output before you run it.
  4. Run it fully offline. The subtitle file is saved next to your media.

Local, private, and free to start

After the one-time model download, SnailText generates subtitles with no internet connection at all. Everything runs on-device, which is a stronger privacy guarantee than any "we delete your file after processing" policy, because there is nothing to upload in the first place.

It runs on Mac and Windows, transcribes 99 languages, and exports a standard SRT or VTT file with phrase-level timing. The free tier covers everyday subtitle work with the compact models.

Offline subtitle generator FAQ

Is there a subtitle generator that does not upload my video?
Yes, SnailText. It generates subtitles on your own machine, so the audio or video is never uploaded to a server. That is the core difference from browser-based subtitle generators, which upload your media to process it. SnailText works offline after a one-time model download.
Does the offline subtitle generator add a watermark?
No. There is no watermark on the subtitles or the output, on any tier. Because it runs locally rather than as a freemium web service, there is no watermark to gate the free version behind.
What do I need to run it offline?
Just the app and a downloaded speech model. The model download is the only network step, after that, subtitle generation runs entirely on your machine with no connection. Video formats also download a one-time codec pack, then run offline.
Does the offline subtitle generator burn the subtitles into the video?
SnailText writes a separate SRT or VTT file and does not hardcode captions into the video. That keeps the subtitles editable and lets you attach them in any player or editor. If you want them burned in, overlay the SRT in a video editor afterward.
Are the subtitles word-level or phrase-level?
The subtitles are phrase-level: SnailText writes one cue per spoken phrase with a start and end time, the standard readable format for an SRT or VTT file. It does not produce word-by-word or animated karaoke-style captions.
How much does it cost?
The free tier generates subtitles locally with the compact Whisper models, no account and no per-minute meter. Pro adds the larger, more accurate models and an optional on-device AI cleanup pass, $7.49/mo or $89/yr for up to 3 devices.
