Dictation in Lovable

Voice dictation in Lovable for build prompts, follow-ups, and edit instructions

Lovable has a Voice Mode, but it only fills its own prompt box and runs in the cloud. SnailText dictates into Lovable and every other tool in your build stack, with the speech model running on your machine.

AI dictation in Lovable, on your device

SnailText is AI dictation: a speech model turns your voice into text, then a second model cleans it up, dropping filler, fixing punctuation, and matching the style your work needs. Both models run on your own machine, so nothing you say in Lovable is uploaded for transcription. Press the hotkey, speak, and the finished text lands at your cursor.

Does Lovable have built-in dictation?

Lovable added a native Voice Mode in 2025: you hold a mic button in the chat and your speech is transcribed into the prompt box (the transcription runs on ElevenLabs Scribe in the cloud). It is genuinely useful, but it only works inside Lovable's own prompt box, so the rest of your build stack, the Supabase dashboard, GitHub, your terminal, docs, stays keyboard-only. SnailText runs the speech model on your own machine and dictates into Lovable and every one of those other tools from the same hotkey.

Speech to text in Lovable: how it works

SnailText does not plug into Lovable directly. It runs system-wide: a global hotkey (Option+Space (Mac) / Ctrl+Space (Windows), customizable) starts recording, the local speech-to-text engine (Whisper or Parakeet) transcribes what you said, and the text is pasted at your cursor through the system clipboard, the same way it lands when you type. That means it works in every Lovable field, plus every other app on your Mac or Windows machine, with no extension or integration to set up.

That matters in Lovable specifically: lovable works best with long, concrete prompts, and typing all that detail (user flows, validation states, mobile behavior) by hand is slow. Speech to text removes that bottleneck without changing how you work in Lovable.

Voice to text in Lovable: what to dictate

Voice typing in Lovable is not limited to one box. Press the hotkey anywhere a cursor blinks and your speech becomes text, so the things you would normally type out by hand become things you just say.

  • · The initial build prompt describing the whole app, its flows, and data rules
  • · Follow-up iteration prompts like "add dark mode" or "fix the login error"
  • · Edit-mode instructions targeting a specific component
  • · Notes and specs you paste into Supabase, GitHub, or docs alongside Lovable

Where typing slows you down in Lovable

  • · Lovable works best with long, concrete prompts, and typing all that detail (user flows, validation states, mobile behavior) by hand is slow.
  • · Building an app is a heavy chat loop of follow-up prompts, and every refinement is another message to type.
  • · Lovable's own voice stops at its prompt box, so the Supabase dashboard, GitHub, and terminal are still keyboard-only.

Example dictations for Lovable

Build prompt

"Build a habit-tracking app with email sign-in, a daily checklist, a streak counter, and a weekly summary view. Use a clean card layout and make it work well on mobile."

Iteration

"Add a dark mode toggle in the header, persist the choice, and make sure the streak counter stays readable on both themes."

Edit instruction

"On the settings page, move the delete-account button into its own section with a confirmation dialog so nobody hits it by accident."

Lovable voice dictation FAQ

Does Lovable have built-in voice input?
Yes. Lovable has a Voice Mode where you hold a mic button and speak into the prompt box, with the transcription running on ElevenLabs Scribe in the cloud. It only works inside Lovable's own prompt box. SnailText runs the speech model locally on Mac and Windows and dictates into Lovable plus every other tool in your build stack from one hotkey.
Why use SnailText if Lovable already has Voice Mode?
Reach and privacy. Lovable's Voice Mode is cloud-based and confined to its prompt box, so the moment you switch to Supabase, GitHub, or your terminal you are back to typing. SnailText runs on your own machine and dictates into every field in every app, and the Development profile keeps code and product names cased correctly.
Can I use voice typing in Lovable?
Yes. SnailText adds voice typing to Lovable on Mac and Windows. Press the hotkey (Option+Space (Mac) / Ctrl+Space (Windows), customizable), speak, and the text lands at your cursor in any Lovable field, the same way it works for voice to text in every other app on your machine.
Does the dictation work offline?
Yes. SnailText runs the speech model on your device, so dictation works with no internet connection after the model is downloaded. The optional AI cleanup model runs locally too.
Is my voice uploaded anywhere?
No. Audio is processed in RAM on your machine and discarded the moment the text is ready. Nothing is sent to a server for transcription.
How much does SnailText cost?
The free tier gives you unlimited local speech-to-text with no account. Pro adds larger models and the on-device AI cleanup, $7.49/mo or $89/yr for up to 3 devices.
