Dictation in v0

Voice dictation in v0 for generation prompts, refinements, and specs

v0 has a mic in its prompt bar, but it is a sign-in-gated, click-to-record button confined to that one field. SnailText dictates into v0 and every other app, with the speech model running on your machine.

AI dictation in v0, on your device

SnailText is AI dictation: a speech model turns your voice into text, then a second model cleans it up, dropping filler, fixing punctuation, and matching the style your work needs. Both models run on your own machine, so nothing you say in v0 is uploaded for transcription. Press the hotkey, speak, and the finished text lands at your cursor.

Does v0 have built-in dictation?

v0 by Vercel does have voice input: a microphone icon in the prompt bar that records your speech and transcribes it into the prompt when you click the checkmark. Per Vercel's docs it requires being signed in, it is a two-step record-then-transcribe flow rather than continuous dictation, and it is scoped to the prompt bar, not v0's other text fields. SnailText runs the speech model on your own machine, dictates continuously as you speak, and works in every v0 field plus every other app. (Do not confuse this with Vercel's AI Voice Elements, which are components you build into apps, not the v0 editor's dictation.)

Speech to text in v0: how it works

SnailText does not plug into v0 directly. It runs system-wide: a global hotkey (Option+Space (Mac) / Ctrl+Space (Windows), customizable) starts recording, the local speech-to-text engine (Whisper or Parakeet) transcribes what you said, and the text is pasted at your cursor through the system clipboard, the same way it lands when you type. That means it works in every v0 field, plus every other app on your Mac or Windows machine, with no extension or integration to set up.

That matters in v0 specifically: v0 rewards long, detailed, multi-sentence prompts, which is exactly the high-friction typing that speaking removes. Speech to text removes that bottleneck without changing how you work in v0.

Voice to text in v0: what to dictate

Voice typing in v0 is not limited to one box. Press the hotkey anywhere a cursor blinks and your speech becomes text, so the things you would normally type out by hand become things you just say.

  • · The initial generation prompt describing the UI or app you want
  • · Follow-up refinements in the generate, see, refine loop
  • · Behavioral and visual specs like loading states and responsive rules
  • · Notes and code you move between v0 and your editor

Where typing slows you down in v0

  • · v0 rewards long, detailed, multi-sentence prompts, which is exactly the high-friction typing that speaking removes.
  • · The workflow is a heavy iterative loop, many follow-up prompts per project, each one more typing.
  • · v0's own mic is sign-in-gated and confined to the prompt bar, so every other field and any not-signed-in workflow falls back to typing.

Example dictations for v0

Generation prompt

"Create a pricing page with three tiers, a monthly and yearly toggle, a highlighted middle plan, and a short FAQ below. Make it responsive and match a clean, modern SaaS style."

Refinement

"Add a loading skeleton for the pricing cards, and when the yearly toggle is on, show the savings as a small badge on each plan."

Behavior spec

"On mobile, stack the tiers vertically and move the highlighted plan to the top so it is the first thing users see."

v0 voice dictation FAQ

Does v0 have built-in voice input?
Yes. v0 by Vercel has a microphone icon in the prompt bar that records your speech and transcribes it when you click the checkmark. It requires being signed in, is a two-step record-then-transcribe flow, and only works in the prompt bar. SnailText runs the speech model locally on Mac and Windows, dictates continuously, and works in every v0 field and every other app.
Why use SnailText if v0 already has a mic?
v0's mic is a sign-in-gated, click-to-record button locked to the prompt bar. SnailText is system-wide and continuous, so the same hotkey dictates into v0, your editor, GitHub, and email, with no account needed for the transcription and the Development profile keeping code identifiers cased correctly.
Can I use voice typing in v0?
Yes. SnailText adds voice typing to v0 on Mac and Windows. Press the hotkey (Option+Space (Mac) / Ctrl+Space (Windows), customizable), speak, and the text lands at your cursor in any v0 field, the same way it works for voice to text in every other app on your machine.
Does the dictation work offline?
Yes. SnailText runs the speech model on your device, so dictation works with no internet connection after the model is downloaded. The optional AI cleanup model runs locally too.
Is my voice uploaded anywhere?
No. Audio is processed in RAM on your machine and discarded the moment the text is ready. Nothing is sent to a server for transcription.
How much does SnailText cost?
The free tier gives you unlimited local speech-to-text with no account. Pro adds larger models and the on-device AI cleanup, $7.49/mo or $89/yr for up to 3 devices.
