FLAC is a lossless compressed audio format. It keeps the full quality of the original like WAV, but at roughly half the file size, which makes it popular for archiving recordings and high-quality captures. It is less common on phones but standard among people who care about audio fidelity.

Can I transcribe FLAC files?

Yes. Many online tools do not accept FLAC, but SnailText reads it natively and transcribes it locally with the Whisper model. It works immediately with no extra codec download. You get text, or SRT and VTT subtitles if you pick them before the run.

Does lossless FLAC improve transcription over MP3?

FLAC preserves the full audio, so the model gets everything, but for speech a good MP3 usually transcribes about the same. The real benefit of FLAC is quality-preserving storage. If your archive is already FLAC, SnailText transcribes it with no conversion step.

Yes. Pick SRT or VTT as the output before you run the transcription and SnailText writes a subtitle file with phrase-level timestamps. Choose it up front, since subtitles are produced during the run. You can also export plain text, Markdown, or JSON.

What languages can it transcribe?

SnailText transcribes in the full set of Whisper languages (99), and can auto-detect the language or let you pick. Everything runs locally, so multilingual transcription works with no internet after the model is downloaded.
