Automatic subtitles, generated locally

SnailText generates subtitles by transcribing the speech in your file and writing the timing into a standard subtitle file. It runs the Whisper speech model on your own machine, so the audio never leaves your computer, and it works on both Mac and Windows.

You get a real SRT or VTT file you can drop onto a video in any editor or player, not captions burned into the video. That keeps the subtitles editable and separate, the way most workflows want them.

How to generate subtitles

  1. Open the Transcribe files screen in SnailText.
  2. Add your audio or video file, or a whole folder of them.
  3. Choose SRT or VTT as the output before you run it.
  4. Run it. The subtitle file is saved next to your media, ready to use.

Free, offline, and no watermark

Most online subtitle generators upload your file to a server, cap you at a few minutes, and stamp a watermark on the free tier. SnailText does none of that: it generates subtitles locally, so there is no upload, no length limit beyond your own memory, and no watermark.

The free tier uses the compact Whisper models with no account. Timestamps are phrase-level, one cue per spoken phrase, which is what you want for readable subtitles on a talk, a lecture, or a video.

Subtitle generator FAQ

Does the subtitle generator work offline?
Yes. SnailText generates subtitles on your own machine with the Whisper speech model, so it works with no internet after the model is downloaded. Audio and video formats that need a codec pack download it once, then run offline too.
Does it add a watermark or upload my video?
No to both. Your file is never uploaded, it is transcribed locally, and there is no watermark on the subtitles or the output. That is the main difference from browser-based subtitle generators, which upload your media and often watermark the free tier.
Can it generate subtitles in other languages?
Yes. SnailText transcribes in the full set of Whisper languages (99) and can auto-detect the language or let you pick, all locally. So you can generate subtitles for non-English audio and video without sending it anywhere.
Does the subtitle generator burn the subtitles into the video?
SnailText writes a separate SRT or VTT file and does not hardcode captions into the video. That keeps the subtitles editable and lets you attach them in any player or editor. If you want them burned in, overlay the SRT in a video editor afterward.
Are the subtitles word-level or phrase-level?
The subtitles are phrase-level: SnailText writes one cue per spoken phrase with a start and end time, the standard readable format for an SRT or VTT file. It does not produce word-by-word or animated karaoke-style captions.
How much does it cost?
The free tier generates subtitles locally with the compact Whisper models, no account and no per-minute meter. Pro adds the larger, more accurate models and an optional on-device AI cleanup pass, $7.49/mo or $89/yr for up to 3 devices.
