Dictation in Evernote
Voice dictation in Evernote for meeting notes, journal entries, and quick capture
Evernote added its own Dictation, but it only works inside Evernote. SnailText gives you one voice-to-text shortcut that works the same in Evernote and every other app, with the speech model running on your device.

AI dictation in Evernote, on your device
SnailText is AI dictation: a speech model turns your voice into text, then a second model cleans it up, dropping filler, fixing punctuation, and matching the style your work needs. Both models run on your own machine, so nothing you say in Evernote is uploaded for transcription. Press the hotkey, speak, and the finished text lands at your cursor.
Does Evernote have built-in dictation?
Evernote added a native Dictation option in the note toolbar that converts speech to typed text live, plus a separate AI Transcribe feature for turning recorded files into text. So the honest picture is not that Evernote cannot dictate, it can. The difference is reach: Evernote's Dictation only works inside Evernote's own editor. SnailText gives you one hotkey that dictates into Evernote and every other app on your machine the same way, with the speech model and the optional AI cleanup both running locally.
Speech to text in Evernote: how it works
SnailText does not plug into Evernote directly. It runs system-wide: a global hotkey (Option+Space (Mac) / Ctrl+Space (Windows), customizable) starts recording, the local speech-to-text engine (Whisper or Parakeet) transcribes what you said, and the text is pasted at your cursor through the system clipboard, the same way it lands when you type. That means it works in every Evernote field, plus every other app on your Mac or Windows machine, with no extension or integration to set up.
That matters in Evernote specifically: capturing a fast idea before it is gone, when typing is too slow to catch a thought mid-flow. Speech to text removes that bottleneck without changing how you work in Evernote.
Voice to text in Evernote: what to dictate
Voice typing in Evernote is not limited to one box. Press the hotkey anywhere a cursor blinks and your speech becomes text, so the things you would normally type out by hand become things you just say.
- · Meeting notes captured in real time
- · Journal and daily-log entries
- · To-do lists and quick task capture
- · Research notes and ideas jotted before they fade
Talk instead of typing
Where typing slows you down in Evernote
- · Capturing a fast idea before it is gone, when typing is too slow to catch a thought mid-flow.
- · Long-form journaling, where sustained typing causes fatigue and you write less than you would say.
- · Taking meeting notes in real time, where it is hard to type fast enough to keep up while also listening.
Example dictations for Evernote
Quick capture
"Idea for the Q3 campaign: partner with a niche newsletter instead of running broad paid ads, cheaper and better targeted. Follow up with Priya on the budget this week."
Meeting notes
"Product sync, July tenth. Decision: ship the beta to the waitlist first. Action items: Sam to finalize the onboarding copy by Friday, Dana to set up the feedback form. Open question: do we gate the export feature."
Journal entry
"Long day but a good one. Shipped the thing I had been putting off for two weeks and it felt lighter than I expected. Note to self: momentum beats motivation, just start smaller next time."
