Convert audio to a VTT caption file

VTT is the caption format the web uses: HTML5 video players, YouTube, and streaming platforms accept .vtt files natively. If you have audio you are pairing with a video on the web, generating a VTT is the right output. SnailText transcribes the audio and writes a phrase-level VTT, all locally.

It works with MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus, and FLAC out of the box. The result is a standard .vtt file ready to pair with your media.

How to convert audio to VTT

  2. Add your audio file (MP3, WAV, M4A, and more) or a folder of them.
  3. Choose VTT as the output before you run it.
  4. Run it. The .vtt file is saved next to your audio.

How do I convert MP3 to VTT?
Open SnailText, go to Transcribe files, add your MP3, choose VTT as the output, and run it. SnailText transcribes the MP3 locally and writes a .vtt file with phrase-level timing. MP3 works immediately with no extra download, nothing is uploaded.
What is the difference between VTT and SRT for audio?
VTT (WebVTT) is the web caption standard, used by HTML5 video and YouTube. SRT is older and more widely supported by media players. Both are generated from the same transcription, with the same phrase-level timing. Pick the format your target player or platform needs.
Can I use the VTT on YouTube?
Yes. YouTube accepts WebVTT (.vtt) files for manual caption upload. Once SnailText generates the VTT from your audio, you can upload it directly as a caption track for your video.
Does SnailText burn the subtitles into the video when I use Audio to VTT?
No. SnailText writes a separate VTT file and does not hardcode captions into the video. That keeps the subtitles editable and lets you attach them in any player or editor. If you want them burned in, overlay the file in a video editor afterward.
